Welcome to Waseca Area Assistive Tech/Accessability Information

Belief Statement

The Waseca Area Assistive Technology Team is committed to empowering students, fostering independence, promoting achievement of education and career goals and assisting students to discover, develop, and demonstrate full potential of their abilities.

IDEA Guidance

Assistive technology devices and services were first defined in federal law in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990 (Public Law 101-476). These definitions remained unchanged until 2004 with the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (Public Law 108-446) when an exemption to the definition of an assistive technology device was added to clarify responsibility to provide surgically implanted technology such as cochlear implants.

The IEP team must consider AT every time an IEP is developed. The team is required to provide AT if it is necessary for the student with a disability to:

  • meet individualized education program (IEP) goals

  • participate in general education

  • receive Free Access to Public Education (FAPE)

IDEA 2004 (P.L. 108-446) 34 CFR Sec. 300.105 Assistive technology; IDEA 2004 (P.L.108-446) Sec. 300.324 Development, review, and revision of IEP

Our School District encourages teams to use the SETT framework, developed by Joy Zabala, ED.D to assist them in the consideration process.
