Essential Visual Arts Requirements: Art students will...
1.) Maintain some form of a SKETCHBOOK or ART JOURNAL and/or a FOLDER or BINDER which includes the following:
a.) Project Sketches & Assignment Sketches and /or “Sketchbook” Assignments – Sketches or “Sketchbook” assignments may be in class assignments or homework
b.) Project Development Materials – Materials used in art class to develop ideas and designs in order to create project ideas that are unique and original to each individual student.
c.) Samples & Practice - Samples of techniques or processes being studied and applied in class.
d.) Paperwork – handouts – worksheets - sketches - assignments - notes - vocabulary sheets - graded quizzes & project rubrics ect.
2.) Complete all class PROJECTS & ASSIGNMENTS… Since visual arts courses are largely performance based classes, not completing projects and assignments that we work on during the class period will likely result in failure of the course.
3.) Participate & Engage… in classroom activities, discussions, critiques, etc.. Visual arts education is better achieved through a collaborative experience, and the participation of all students in the classroom will make for a much more enriching experience for all students.
4.) Complete a PORTFOLIO that includes, but is not limited to... a collection of student work & student self evaluations or reflections of artwork created throughout the semester (this may include both a physical & digital portfolio). Each student will maintain this portfolio for the duration of the course. It is extremely important that students save all of their work in their portfolio both physically (and digitally when applicable).

SR High Only
5.) Take a Final Exam and/or Complete a final Project… Students generally will be assigned a final project and/or take a cumulative test at the end of the semester that is designed to evaluate each student’s understanding and ability to complete the course objectives. The final project/exam grade will account for 20% of the student’s final course grade as mandated in the student-parent handbook.
* In order to meet the project and class REQUIREMENTS students must complete each assignment to meet set standards & criteria:
To do so it is imperative that students use class time effectively. *
WHAT TYPES OF ASSIGNMENTS WILL STUDENTS HAVE?
The following two sections describe general guidelines for the types of assignments & point values that can be expected in visual arts courses, however each course may have specified assignments not listed here. If you have any questions about your assignments please reach out to me.
We will be using Google Classrooms as a platform for conducting course business. Students can find class resources such as weekly activities/assignments, project requirements and other class information on Google Classroom which can be accessed through each student's personal G-mail accounts.
Assignment Types:
- Sketchbooks / Art Journal / Art Challenges- Assignments vary for each class. Often sketchbooks will require one sketchbook assignment weekly to be completed as homework, unless time is allotted in class. It is important that you turn in your sketchbook assignments weekly. Art challenges are assignments that challenge you to apply what we are learning in class.
- Project Development - “Make you art P-O-P”, with excellent project planning & development. Your “Project Objective Planning” assignments may be completed in various formats, & may include multiple individual assignments. These assignments are due before starting each art project.
- Weekly Planning, Progress & Process - Students will often turn in their weekly planning, progress, process descriptions, and reflections .
- Projects - Studio assignments will account for the majority of time spent in class and the about 50% of point values acquired throughout the duration of the course.
- In Class Assignments - Will vary in length, point value and should be kept organized in your student sketchbook folder. These assignments may consist of a variety of items such as Bell Ringers, Mini or Short Projects, Samples & Practice, Visual References, Worksheets, Vocabulary, Handouts, ect. (NOTE: When not completed during the allotted time in class, these assignments will need to be finished outside of class as homework)
- Homework/Out of Class Assignments – Most visual arts courses will require some
homework assignments which may include weekly sketchbook assignments. Other homework will
generally consist of assignments started in class such as , research, sketches or projects. Students
may also be asked to bring in items from home as a part of a class assignment.
- Quizzes, Pop Quizzes & Other Checks for Understanding - All of these forms of
assessment are intended to evaluate students' understanding of vocabulary, artistic processes,
content covered and the like, and will be administered periodically often at the beginning or end of a
unit or assignment.

Assignment Point System:
Sketchbook /Art Journal / Art Challenge (5-10pts): Generally due weekly on designated days
Project Development and/or “P.O.P.” materials (10-25pts): must be turned in before starting a major project.
Weekly Planning, Progress, & Process (5-10pts): due weekly on Fridays during work weeks, completed daily in class
Projects (50-100pts): vary depending on the significance, duration, and process
Bell Ringers & Folder / Binder Checks (5pts): completed daily in class, due weekly on Fridays,
Assignments (Both In & Out of Class) - (5-25pts): these are short assignments (one class period-one week) to complete
Quizzes (10-25pts): usually given at the start or closure of a unit/assignment; students will be informed of the quiz date prior to quiz
Checks for Understanding(1-5pts): can be administered at any time and will cover information learned earlier that day or week .
Exam: Midterm & Final Exams will often include a written, oral, or combined exam following a similar format of assessments given throughout the course.
*NOTE: Students will lose points on late assignments/projects, the point loss amount will vary depending on the assignment value, type & the duration of
Assignment Policies:
Grace Period:
All major art projects will have a designated due date. Students will have time in class to finish projects up until the official due date. From the due date to exactly one week past that due date is considered the grace period. Students may turn in or rework projects up until the end of the grace period without any late point penalties. This one week grace period only applies to major art projects, not smaller assignments, or semester long items such as the final portfolio
Effort, Participation, & Professionalism:
Each project rubric includes a section on "Commitment" including effort and participation. Points can be lost for a variety of reasons such as, not having materials, being late to class, acting foolishly in class, not cleaning up properly and misuse of class time or materials. Please note that effort is worth 1/5th or 20% of the project rubric.
Re-Takes, Re-Works & Redos:
Things happen; sometimes we struggle with specific assignments or techniques, or have a bad day or week. Therefore, you have the opportunity to re-take, rework, or re-do any assignment that you perform poorly on in order to demonstrate your knowledge and abilities as well as improve your grade. However, a word of caution is advised; since creating art is often very time consuming, having enough time to re-do or re-work items can often be a dilemma. Avoid using this option as a default. It is much more efficient to do your best and succeed the first time. Also, note that you may not be able to receive full points on the assignment/s (for example if it was originally late)
Extra Projects & Extra Credit Points:
Students may have extra credit opportunities which will be announced. It is more likely however, that a student could raise his or her grade point average by completing a “Extra Project” or “extra sketches.” An extra project is not worth extra credit points. Instead it is worth an extra grade, which can only raise (not harm) a student’s grade point average. These are usually worth 10 points unless a student is working on a larger project in which the teacher will assign the appropriate point value considering time spent.
Ethics Agreement:
The internet provides an endless number of images and artwork that can be inspirational to us as artists. However, the use or reproduction of images created by someone else, or the use of their intellectual or creative content is a form of plagiarism. The use of imagery that is not your own or collected through any means other than those approved is not allowed will be considered plagiarism, and will likely require re-starting the assignment. If you are unsure of whether or not you can use specific imagery, please, ask. Plagiarized work will not be accepted.
