Watch the video above for a great overview of how to make slip from dry clay, as well as various applications for how slip can be used!
NOTE: Remember whenever working with dry clay we need to do so safely avoiding as much clay dust as possible. When smashing up clay pieces it is recommended that you do the following: Do so outside, wear a mask, put the clay in something like a pillow case, canvas, or plastic bag, mist the clay pieces with water before transferring the dry clay to another container.
Remember from our "Stages of Clay" section that slip is a...
LIQUID / SLURRY / PASTE
...is clay that can be a variety of consistencies from that of a milkshake or slurry to a tackier consistency such as that of a thick mud. Slip has multiple applications
Slip "Glue" / Score & Slip - In the building construction process slip is often used to connect or seam multiple edges or pieces of clay together
Slip Texture & Trailing / Drawing - Slip can also be used as a topical treatment over plastic or leatherhard clay in order to create raised (relief) designs or textures
Slip Casting - Liquid slip can be poured into a mold to create a wide range of ceramic products, from decorative pieces such as household trinkets or decorations, or dinnerware (cup, plates, bowls), or industrial purposes, such as toilets or sinks)
The resources in this section will teach important steps and considerations when using slip to attach clay pieces.
