The "Pinch" method of working with clay is a way of forming all sorts of clay objects. Generally this method refers to making "Pinch Pots" or functional vessels that are formed by pinching the clay into a bowl or dish shape. Pinch pots are generally small in shape as they need to be manageable to make without the support of many other tools or equipment.
Pinch pots are generally relatively small to medium sized as they need to be manageable to form in your hands. Larger vessels are generally made with other methods such as slab, coil or the potters wheel. Finished pinch pots can be smooth cylindrical and round or formed into whatever shape the artist desires. Some ceramic arists create relatively organic or "rough" forms, while others develop very refined forms.
The following videos demonstrate various ways to create a pinch pot. You are encouraged to find your own resources as well.
In this video the instructor teaches you how to get a pinch pot started. The following video will show you how to refine your pinch pot into a finished piece.
Part two teaches you how to take the rough pinch pot form and refine it into a more completed final piece.
The artist in this video first demonstrates making a pinch pot on the table surface as opposed to cupping the clay pinch pot in hand. Throughout the demonstration he cuts the pinch pot in half so that you can see how the walls change throughout the process of forming the clay.
He then demonstrates how to take a basic pinch pot form and transform it into a unique artistic creation by altering its shape, adding, and blending clay.
The artist in this video demonstrates how to make three different forms with the pinch method (bowl, mug, vase). This is a longer video, but feel free to cue it to the appropriate section.
