In the picture above the craftsperson is using an ancient method of constructing a coil vessel using a turning bowl as a supportive base to allow him or her to consistently rotate the vessel as each layer of coil is added.
In claywork there are three basic hand building methods that are often presented as the foundational methods of working with clay including, slab construction, coil method, and pinch technique. These are widely accepted as the three most basic methods of working with clay also know as "Hand Building Methods". However, there are other many other methods and techniques that ceramics artists, sculptors, and potters use on a daily basis in the creation and construction of their pieces, some having ancient roots, and others being more modern conventions. Click on the images and or text in each section below to learn more about each process, method, or technique.
