Contour Drawing

Henri Matisse, 'Matisse's Hand Holding a Fruit' (1944) Ink on Paper

Essentially, contour drawing is the outline of any object.

Blind Contour Drawing

- Let your pencil follow your eye

- Don't lift your pencil off the paper - it should be one continuous line

- Don't look at the paper!!!

- Draw exactly what you see.... it doesn't matter if you get a bit lost

- Make sure your pencil hasn't left the paper!

The final image will look crazy but it doesn't matter - it's a visual record of the path your eye followed. Guess who this is?! (Drawn by one of my Grade 6 students).

Modified Contour Drawing

- Just the same as blind contour, but you can stop and look at the paper.

- Look at the object 95% of the time, your paper 5%

- If you stop to look at the paper, stop your pencil too. You should only draw while you're looking

- Make one continuous line - don't lift your pencil off the paper.
