Collaborations

The work of our center is closely tied to University of Washington Tacoma Masters of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, program which offers graduate degree options in Community and Social Change and Nonprofit Studies.

These degree options offers students the knowledge and the development of strategies and skills to improve the lives of those who, historically, are most vulnerable and have been marginalized. This track is especially relevant for students looking to acquire practical skills that will help them become community and nonprofit leaders, policy analysts, and/or social justice practitioners.

The Center works in collaboration with other like-minded organizations, including:

The Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies, University of Washington

Develops courses, extra-curricular education programs, and research projects in labor history and labor studies, covering all three campuses of the University of Washington. Of particular interest is the Washington Labor History Archive at the UW library and the Labor and Civil Rights History of Seattle digital project.

The UW Center for Equity and Inclusion

The Center for Equity & Inclusion aims to enhance campus education, develop community partnerships, and cultivate our diverse campus community. We strive to foster our diverse learners education and transform communities through a welcoming and inclusive space, programming, and resources for students, staff and faculty, in efforts to engage and learn through the exploration of human differences.

The Tacoma Urban League & African American Financial Capability Initiative

The African American Financial Capability (AAFC) Initiative of Tacoma works to improve and protect the economic security of African-Americans in the Tacoma Pierce County area by enhancing asset-building services, improving policy advocacy strategies and increasing leadership capacity. The Center partners with The Tacoma Urban League to provide interdisciplinary research and support to this three year project.

The Center for the History of the New America at the University of Maryland College Park

This Center documents the new immigrant generations through oral histories. We are sharing oral histories of immigrants in our Tacoma Community History Project, and hope to develop more of them.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Institute for Research and Education at Stanford University

Dr. Carson is advising the Learning from Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement project of the CSCS.

The Fetzer Institute

People across the globe, from all cultures and traditions, embrace love and forgiveness in daily life. These values are universally viewed as central to the fabric of humanity. Yet, the emerging global community has few institutions dedicated to deepening the understanding and fostering deeper awareness of these values. In this context, the Fetzer Institute, based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, pursues a unique role—working to investigate, activate, and celebrate the power of love and forgiveness as a practical force for good in today’s world. We are interested in how people truly experience and understand love and forgiveness from their diverse points of view, especially from the perspective of their daily work in the world.

Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership

This Center of Kalamazoo College aims to develop social justice and human rights leaders through education.

The Center also on occasion collaborates with various educational and social movement organizations.
