William Towey

William's 2017 TacTalk discussed his research on the community response to gentrification the topic of his masters thesis The Battle of Gentrification vs. Centrification: The role of nonprofits.

A strong advocate for social justice, William lives in the Hilltop neighborhood where he is involved with many local community organizations. He is a board member of Downtown On the Go!, Sound Outreach, and the Hilltop Action Coalition one of Tacoma’s longest serving and nationally recognized community groups.

William Towey is a graduate of University of Washington Tacoma MAIS Nonprofit Management program and occasional part-time lecturer in Nonprofit Studies. His current research focuses on self-sustaining systems of community-based inter­generational wealth as well as the impact of gentrification in the Hilltop area of Tacoma. William is Director of Development for the Foundation for Tacoma Students, the backbone organization for Graduate Tacoma, a partnership movement of 268 community organizations from throughout Tacoma using a collective impact model to support cradle-to-career success for Tacoma area students.
