The Grievance Committee is an autonomous subgroup of the Faculty Senate, comprised of individuals selected based on their standing and esteemed reputation in the academic community, and ratified by vote of the USU Faculty Senate.
In adherence to the accreditation standards set forth by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, affiliated institutions are mandated to offer diverse avenues for faculty members to address concerns and grievances. The USU Faculty Grievance Committee, established under USU Instruction 1205: Faculty Grievances, is entrusted with the responsibility of reviewing issues that cannot be resolved through alternative channels, such as EEO, EO, CHR, OPM, OGC, MSPB, and others. The policy applies to civilian and military faculty members, billeted and non-billeted, to seek redress for matters related to the relief of academic responsibilities, denial of academic freedom, failure to be considered for promotion, denial of tenure, and other matters outlined in the aforementioned instruction.
To initiate the grievance process, a faculty member must submit a detailed and factual written petition to the committee chair or vice-chair. This petition should outline the grievance's basis, identify the subject of the grievance, and specify the sought-after remedy. Submissions are to be made within 21 calendar days following the occurrence or within 21 calendar days of the faculty member becoming aware of, or reasonably should have been aware of, the incident.
Faculty members with concerns that may fall within the committee's purview are encouraged to consult with a committee member to gain clarity on the procedure for seeking redress.
