A U Card is your University of Minnesota student ID and is required for access to Moos Tower, the student lounge, and certain labs and locker areas. You will need these access rights the first week of class, so it is important to request your U Card early.
All students, faculty, and staff are also required to wear a visible U Card when attending class or conducting business in Moos Tower. Students, faculty, and staff will be able to use public entrances or access any of the approximately 30 other doors with card readers using their U Card. Public access to the Health Sciences buildings will be restricted to three staffed entrances from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
These entrances are:
Second floor of Moos Tower at Washington Avenue, which is wheelchair accessible through the Washington Avenue Parking Ramp tunnel
Second floor of Mayo Building at Church Street
Third floor of Moos Tower at the Delaware Circle, which are both wheelchair accessible.
On evenings and weekends, the buildings will be closed to the public. All visitors and patients will be required to be on an appointment list and check in when they enter the complex, or be escorted by someone with a U Card.
To ensure you have correct U Card access by your first day of classes, please request your U Card by August 1. This will allow staff time to request access for your card. Below are the steps to request your U Card. You do not have to have your U Card in-hand for your access to be granted; your U Card request just needs to be fully submitted.
If you are already a UMN student and already have a U Card:
If you have the new version of the U Card (vertical design) you may keep it. You DO NOT need to upload a new photo and can ignore the instruction below. Access will be added to your card in August before the start of classes.
If you have an older version of the U Card (horizontal design), please read the instructions below. You must get a new card that has updated technology for building access systems, and serves as your clinic ID badge. Upgrading old cards may incur a replacement fee.
If you were not previously a UMN student and do not yet have a U Card:
Visit the U Card Office website for information on how to request your U Card online or in person.
Upload your U Card photo by following this link z.umn.edu/photoupload or visiting the U Card Office in person.
If you upload your photo online, please be sure to read the directions to ensure your photo is not rejected. You will be notified by the U Card Office via email if your photo is accepted or rejected. You will need to sign in using your UMN email and password (provided by Susan Wold). We cannot start adding door access until your card is completed. If you are still using an email from a different UMN campus, please follow the instructions found on the incoming student webpage on how to get that switched over to @umn.edu.
You are responsible for picking up your U Card when it is ready. If you are not able to pick it up until you are in the area for orientation, no problem. You will still have time to pick it up before the first day of classes.
If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Anderson at and10988@umn.edu.
