The Klondike Derby is a challenging midwinter contest of teamwork and Scouting skills. Your “team” (patrol or crew) will pull a dog sled you have built yourself (ahead of time) over a course through woods and fields. Your sled is loaded with the equipment you will need for the day’s activities. The trail will take you to a number of Klondike "towns" spread along the route. Upon arriving at each "town," your Team Leader reports to the town mayor who assigns you a task. Teams are awarded gold nuggets for completing the tasks. The team with the most gold nuggets, coupled with an overall time to complete the course is the winner. There are usually on the order of 25 teams involved, so this is a major scouting event.
On Saturday, Feb 5 will be the annual Klondike Derby at Camp Highroads near Aldie, VA (45 minute drive). Trying to figure out how many 6-10 person teams we will have for the event, and of those going, how many are interested in camping overnight Friday, Feb 4.
