On February 5, 2011 Troop 1130 set out to Camp Highroad in Aldie, VA to compete in the annual Klondike Derby. The derby, hosted by Troop 111, is based on the Canadian gold rush of the 19th century. Approximately 20 scouts and parents attended the event. Troop 1130 was divided into two teams, a junior team led by Aaron, and David, and a senior team led by Andrew and Salim. The two teams set out on a 4 mile course pushing their sleds full of supplies, stopping at various stations to complete challenges; scout knowledge, orienteering, first aid, knots and lashings, and camp skills. The scouts were awarded “gold nuggets” for each successful challenge completed. The team with the fastest time and the most nuggets won the competition. The winners of the competition have yet to be announced. Despite the cold and wet weather the scouts had a fantastic time at the derby and are looking forward to next year’s derby.
