Upto the 19th century, infinity was always considered to be a potential - a succession of finites without bound. At the end of the 19th century, Cantor presented the first mathematical notion of an actual infinity - for example, an infinite set of objects. Cantor considered what it means to measure the "size" of an infinite set (which we call cardinality) and discovered some very interesting ideas, which were controversial at the time.
