Mathematics as we know it was born in ancient Greece around 500BC, when Pythagoras returned from his travels in Egypt and opened the first school of Mathematics. These studies continued for several centuries, and around 300BC, Euclid wrote "The Elements" -- the oldest Mathematics book we still have today. This book begins with plane geometry, continues into number theory and ends with the geometry of space. The Mathematics described in this book is very deep, yet is built upon very simple and intuitive concepts -- points, lines, triangles, and circles. As opposed to the way they teach geometry in high school, we will not skip over the deep and difficult parts just to "get done with the material". We will slowly study Euclid's book, related books and other ideas to discover the full depth of elementary geometry.
You are invited to come at any time -- it will be helpful, but not necessary, to have been in the prior meetings to study in this class.
