Ms. Jennings – Math Protocols (2019 - 2020)
Protocols for the room is a way to create an environment where all students can learn. Students need a learning environment where the conversations and text-based chats focuses on math, and math vocabulary is used. Students are first expected to follow school-wide C.A.R.E.S. expectations.
Ms. Jennings - Classroom Expectations - (in-person learning)
• Respect people and property
• Use voice appropriate to task
• Keep your hands and feet to yourself
• Keep the room neat and clean
• Do your best
Math Expectations
• Employ strategies to try to solve problems and engage in productive struggle
• Develop Growth Mindset
• Active listening is required when not directly engaged
• Create a math notebook & keep unit materials together in an organized way.
• Encourage and Support the learning of others
Protocols of the Room - In-Person
A.) Silent Signals - We use them to promote active listening, class participation, and a class focused on mathematics.
1. I agree, I disagree during whole class discussion (Thumbs up / Thumbs down)
2. I need to go to the bathroom (Thumb in fist while seated) When you are silently dismissed to go to the bathroom, sign-out, document the time, and take the pass. Return the pass and note when you return to the room. Only one girl and one boy should be out at the bathroom at one time.
3. Answering questions - (raise your hand and wait to be called on)
4. I need Ms. Jennings to move away from the board (pledge position).
5. I need another student to be quiet. (non-aggressive silent coyote)
6. Saying I agree with another classmate, during whole class discussion. (Thumb and 5th finger outstretched, while hand rocking gently)
B.) Testing Procedures
1.) Stay seated after taking a quiz or a test. Complete work assigned on the board, until test papers are handed in (front to back, with last person counting all papers for the row.)
2.) Remain silent during testing. There will always be additional work you can get done in your seat after you complete a test.
C.) Normal Classroom Procedures
1.) Come in classroom do individual or table jobs (if needed)
2.) . Complete “DO NOW” – This is the time to sharpen pencils
3.) Remain seated (except during DO NOW or EXPLORE).
4.) Hand-in papers either to paper collectors, station #, or class basket. (Whatever you been tolds)
5.) Put Full Name, class and student number on all papers to be turned in. Class & Student Number belong in the far right hand corner. This example shows what student number 27 in class 6J would write: 6J / 27
6.) Projects and formal assignment require full heading: First & last name, date, class/student # and my name, title, and subtitle.; Must use the lines of the paper
7.) If you need to walk across the room, put work on the board, it is to be done in a way that does not distract others from learning. "Walk in classroom circumspectly"
8.) Take assigned seat, whether it be for small group or classroom instruction.
9.) Do not wear hoods or hats (School Policy).
10.) Food is only to be eaten with permission. Exceptions: Snack Time (4th period first fifteen minutes). Do throw all materials in garbage after snack,
11.) Participate in all classroom activities as part of your class participation grade.
12.) Follow school rules with devices.
13.). Place water bottles on the floor when not in use.
D.) Student Requirements
• Have 2 sharpened pencils
• _Mini-pencil sharpener
• 3 One-subject Notebooks with following titles:
1.) Classwork
2.) (8th grade) Practice and Problem Solving
OR
2.) (6th and 7th grades) Practice, Extra Practice, & Problem Solving
3.) Math Dictionary and Brain Book (to be kept in classroom)
• Yellow Math Folder (Separate from Binder)
• Highlighter, Red Pen, Colored Pencils (optional)
• Personal hole punch
• Planner
E.) Start of Class
• _Come in room silently (6th grade only)
• Refrain from asking questions during “DO NOW”
• Do Now is to be copied in notebook with objective (Dated).
• Take homework out
• Do classroom jobs (return papers, hand-out papers).
• Sharpen Pencils
• Students Questions/Concerns will be heard right before Mini-lesson
F.) Start of Mini-Lesson (10 minutes into the period)
• Remain seated
• No sharpening of pencils
Engage in active listening
No leaving room, leaving seats
G. Start of Explore (Guided Practice)
Engage in productive struggle.
Engage in individual work, partner work, or group work.
Work with table mate, partner – unless you have been assigned as embassador
H. Start of Summary
• Prepare for Whole Class Discussion
• Return quickly back to seat.
• Put work on the board, have an exit ticket, or any activity to recap the learning for the day.
• Add to the objectives the significant learnings of the day
• Write homework in planner
End of Summary
• Check area for papers on the floor, all things are together.
• 1-2-3 Dismal procedure – 1 Pack-up; 2 Stand behind desk an put together tables 3-Dismiss a table at a time
• Line up in an orderly fashion by the door.
