Ms. Jennings' Math Autobiography
An exercise in Math Expressions
My name is Ms. Jennings and I teach 6th, 7th, and the 9th-grade Algebra 1 class (taken by 8th graders), at the Ethical Community Charter School. This my fifth year at TECCS.
The number of people in my family is the 2nd prime number. I have one son who is graduated from Northwestern University last June. He likes reading, playing video games, piano, tennis, and oh yes, he loves basketball! My husband is a professional musician. He is a composer and plays the piano and the organ. I am happy that many of you have met him in our assemblies We have been married for 5*6+1 years. My husband hated math in school but uses it every day in playing and writing music. The new TV shows that we watch and regularly discuss is Beat Bobby Flay and Chopped. We still love to watch SharkTank.
I was not always good at math. In fact, in the 4th grade, we had arithmetic workshops including the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. I never got out of the addition class. In the 5th grade, math started to become more difficult. My father encouraged me, pointing to Alexandria and all the great mathematics that came out of Egypt, Africa.
As the years grew on, I became better and better at mathematics, taking algebra in 8th grade. In college, I took all types of math courses (some for computer science) and well as calculus. I learned to study in groups, and that helped me a great deal. While the 1st two semesters of Calculus went well, I struggled in the 3rd semester failed and had to re-take the course. In the end, I triumphed!
My first career was as a computer professional. I consulted for many top companies in New York including Chase, Madison Square Garden, and I even had a chase a computer virus at ABC-TV, on the set of One Life to Live. I also did professional training, teaching computer professionals about computer communication. I worked in the computer industry, either teaching or consulting, for (4*5)+ 1 years.
In my elementary teaching career, I have taught elementary school, specializing in middle school math for 32 +3 years. However, for a period of 100-97 years, I worked as a math specialist traveling all across the NY state, and the continental U.S. teacher Common Core to teachers all over the country. During that time, I worked in at least SQRT (100) states including California, New Mexico, Oregon, Alamba as well as New York and New Jersey.
I look forward to being with you this year at The Ethical Community Charter School for 183 days of the school year!
