Week of April 12th - Students have started working on a brand new domain - Expressions and Equations
Students learned the definition of expressions and equations. My 6th graders were very surprised that the word expression has a totally different meaning in math! But in math, we express with number(s), symbol(s), and operations. This was a week for vocabulary so several new terms were introduced including expression, equation, variable, algebraic expressions, operations, symbols, and inequalities. I have also taught the students they can no longer use the letter for multiplying like 2x3 instead we do 2*3=2(3)
Students are using Math Mammoth (online text) to begin the study of Algebra. The section starts with numeric expressions and compares them to algebraic expressions.
Students still should be reviewing fractions, decimals, and percents. Students are also working on the Skittles Packets which have them studying percents. Much more skittles were eaten than work handed in! But we are going to switch that soon! There are 4 pages that students should be working on, the pages are listed in Google Classroom.
Here is one of our students hard at work!!!
