Watches are essential for serious cross country runners. Many times you will have to time yourself on intervals. I recommend GPS watches so you can check your pace in the middle of runs and know how far you have run during practices. The data from GPS watches can be uploaded to software on the web so I can check your training.

Fortunately, GPS watch prices have lowered, and I contacted Garmin, one of the biggest sport GPS watch companies to see if they have a school program. Garmin is offering us very good discounts on their watches. They also have special promotions that run from time to time.

Garmin's current offerings are below. With the promotion on the 245, I recommend spending the extra $50 and getting it over the 45 and definitely spend the extra $10 and get it over the 55. The 245 has quite a few more valuable features. A lot of our teammates have a 245. Check with them. On the other hand, the newer 255 isn't that much better than the 245. I think you won't miss much if you save and get the 245.

Garmin CLIPBOARD

Garmin has new software that allows you to upload you run data so I can check on your training. It is called Athlete Portal.

Athlete Portal – a way for athlete to coach communication. Download Garmin Clipboard and select “I am an athlete” to get started. At this time, Athlete Portal is available to only iOS users. Android version will be coming soon!
