This year we will focus on learning about world cultures. Students will compare and contrast countries around the world. We will start the year by learning and focusing on our own country. We will learn quite a bit about our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. and our government. Our social studies curriculum will also cover current events with the use of Scholastic News. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to come in and share their own cultural knowledge and experiences with the class. Your wealth of knowledge is a wonderful asset to our learning! We all LOVE learning about your culture and experiences from you!
The Scholastic News current events “magazine” that was sent home with your child is a good source of interesting current events and will enhance our study of social studies, science, and language arts curriculum. I suggest that, if you have the time, you sit down and read Scholastic News with your child each week. It is an excellent way to discuss current events with your child while practicing effective reading strategies. Students will always have a complete week to read and complete their Scholastic News activities. Students are expected to complete all activities inside and on the back cover of their Scholastic News.
