Read, Read, Read. The joy and practice of reading will be stressed through daily read alouds, guided reading, shared reading, and independent reading at home and in school. Students will be asked to read for at least 15 to 20 minutes a night. Children will improve their reading skills through reading workshop, guided reading groups, shared readings, small and large group instruction, reading across the curriculum, and independent reading at their own reading level. Students will read a balance of both fiction and nonfiction. Reading skills will be taught and reinforced through all curriculum areas including science, social studies, and math.
Children will participate in writing workshop as they work to improve their writing skills. Children will learn how to write in different genres throughout the year and will be given the opportunity to enjoy writing for authentic purposes. Students will engage in writing poetry, personal narratives, persuasive writing, informative writing, compare and contrast essays, fairy tales, note taking, and research reports. Students will continue to work on the difficult skill of editing and revising their own writing as well. The use of writing conferences will play an intricate role in improving their writing skills throughout the course of the year. Lastly, children will improve their grammar throughout the year through formal grammar lessons, mini-lessons, and writing conferences.
The lower and upper case script alphabet will be taught and practiced throughout the year.
