In order to find their way around, our ancestors had to construct monuments, create detailed maps, and learn to read the stars in the night sky. Knowing your exact location is so important to mariners that the British government offered the Longitude Prize in 1714, which was a reward for creating a simple and practical method for the precise determination of a ship’s longitude. Luckily, things are much easier today. If you want to know your exact location, you can turn on your GPS receiver (or use the GPS application on your phone) and it will tell you exactly where you are on Earth at any moment.
Essential Question: How does a GPS receiver incorporate modern technology in order to determine to give you your precise location on Earth?
