Paper Tower
Objective: To construct a free-standing tower of maximum height using a single sheet of paper.
Rules:
1) Each team will be supplied with one sheet of copy paper and one 50 cm strip of Scotch tape.
2) No other materials may be used as construction materials for the tower.
3) Each team can use the following materials: scissors, ruler, pencil, pens.
4) Each team will work on only one tower.
5) The sheet of paper may be cut into pieces and reassembled as desired. Parts may be rolled,
folded or slit.
6) Tape is to be used to fasten parts of the tower together. It may not be used to attach the tower
to the floor or any other object.
7) A tower shall be declared free-standing if it remains self-supporting for ten seconds or more.
8) Height is determined by measuring the perpendicular distance from the highest point of the
tower to the floor.
9) Each team must complete the construction of the tower within the allotted time given
(approximately 30 minutes).
Scoring: Tallest free-standing tower wins!
Hints: - Use all members of your team. Don't have people sitting around watching - TEAMWORK is the key!
- Think about and discuss your tower design BEFORE you start the construction.
- It is possible to make a tower at least 2 meters high from one piece of paper!!
