On April 4, 1974, John Massis was able to pull two Long Island railroad passenger cars (approximately 80 tons – 70,000 kg) from rest. He was able to accomplish this feat by biting down on a bit that was attached to the cars with a rope, then leaning backwards and pressing his feet against the railway ties.
Essential Question: Did he have to pull with superhuman strength to accelerate the railroad cars?
