Objective: Construct the shortest possible egg catcher that will catch an egg from the greatest possible height.
Materials: Each group (3-4 students) will get the following materials that may be used to make their egg catcher:
Materials: 1 large folder 2 index cards
1 cup 1 meter of masking tape
2 rubber bands 1 coffee filter
1 paper plate 1 piece of scrap paper
Construction:
- You will have 1 period to design and construct your egg catcher.
- Only the materials provided may be used your device (you may not use the scissors as a part of your device).
- The egg catcher must be free standing. It may not be attached to the floor in any way.
Dropping the egg:
- All teams will drop their eggs from the same heights at approximately the same time. The drops will be from heights of 0.3 m, 0.6 m, 0.9 m, 1.2 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 2.5 m and 3.0 m.
- You will have four minutes between each drop. You are allowed to repair or change your device, but if the device height changes, the greatest height will be used in scoring.
Scoring: The scores will be calculated as follows:
Score = Maximum successful drop height (m)
Height of egg catcher (m)
The height of your egg catcher will be measured from the floor to the tallest point of your device by one of the observing teachers.
Notes:
· There will be no practice drops.
· Each team must drop their egg from each height.
· The egg must land without breaking or cracking (including bouncing) for a drop to be successful.
· The judge(s) have the final decision – arguing will cause you to lose points
Bouncing is usually the problem!!
