Assignment: WRITE A LETTER ASKING TO JOIN THE COLONY of Pennsylvania
- It must have a title.
- The letter must show your knowledge of Penn & the Quakers.
- BE SURE TO INCLUDE 3-5 FACTS ABOUT THE QUAKERS.
- The letter must ask for a tract of land for you & your family to settle on.
- The letter must “impress” Penn so that he just can’t say no!
- Your LETTER should be at least TWO paragraphs long.
- It should be written with VOICE, not just a simple restatement of facts.

-Facts on the Quakers:
- Born in London, England, the son of a naval officer knighted as Sir William Penn
- Attended Oxford University and was expelled for opposing the rule that all had to be Protestant members of the Church of England.
- Penn’s father sent him to France & Italy to be “cultured” and he returned a noble gentleman.
- At 22, he went to Ireland to manage his father’s estates and he met a Quaker preacher named Thomas Loe who taught Penn the Quaker faith.
- Penn was imprisoned three separate times for preaching the Quaker faith in England.
- King Charles II of England gave Penn land in America to repay a debt the King owed to his father.
- Penn called the land “Sylvania” and King Charles II added Penn to the name.
- Pennsylvania reflected Penn’s Quaker beliefs:
- Religious Toleration: People could worship however they wanted.
- Colonists of Pennsylvania had personal & property rights along with the right of self-government.
- Creating friendly relationships with the Natives & paying for land that was once the Natives.
- Some racial equality existed in the colony.
- People should help their fellow human being whenever possible.
- Anti-War (Pacifism): Penn did not have a militia to protect the colony and did not believe in war.
