As White ventured further onto the island in search of the missing colonists, he quickly realized that all of the houses and forts had been disassembled, as if the colonists had intended to take them elsewhere to rebuild. There was no sign of a fire, no sign of a Native American raid, no sign of a quick, unplanned departure by the colonists. A few personal belongings were found in a chest in the woods but other than that, there was no sing of a hurried escape.
