Theory 1: Some historians believe the colonists at Roanoke ventured back out to sea, either attempting to return to England or perhaps to find a new location to settle. Some argue that the fate of the lost colonists lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Extensive archaeological research has been done in and around the shores of Roanoke Island. While many clues have surfaced, none have directly pointed at the colonists dying at sea, perhaps in a storm.
Theory 2: Other historians argue that the lost colonists from Roanoke probably suffered the same fate of many future European settlers: death by disease. Because the colonists arrived on Roanoke right before winter and were ill-prepared to survive with few supplies, it is possible they starved to death and were buried somewhere by the natives.
Perhaps recent finds of pottery and other artifacts both 50 miles inland and on Hatteras Island below Roanoke, suggest the colony split in two and were helped by the Native Americans
