When John White ventured further into Roanoke Island in search of the missing colonists, he quickly realized that all of the houses and nearby fort had been disassembled. White believed the colonists did this intending to rebuild them somewhere else where they might move to. There was no sign of a fire, no sign of a Native American raid or attack, and no sign of a hurried exit off the island. The only other physical evidence were some personal items found rotted out in a chest found in the nearby woods. This led White to believe that maybe the colonists had left willingly.
