Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated at the end of each semester. GPAs are calculated based on the following scale:
Weighted Courses:
Certain courses are taught within Stanly County Schools that are weighted differently. The course descriptions indicate the schools where the courses are taught. The purpose of honors and AP courses is to provide the opportunity for advanced work and to promote rigorous academic study. These courses are designed for students who have demonstrated an advanced level of interest, learning, and achievement in a given subject area. Students should understand honors and AP courses are more demanding. They have requirements beyond those of standard courses. Honors, AP, and college transfer CCP classes carry extra weight on a student’s GPA.
Grade Classification:
To be classified as a sophomore, a student must have passed the number of units equal to his maximum potential less 2 units
To be classified as a junior, a student must have passed the number of units equal to his maximum potential less 3 units
To be classified as a senior, a student must have passed the number of units equal to his maximum potential less 4 units
Class Rank:
North Carolina legislation requires all graduates to have a standardized high school transcript. In order to meet that requirement, the Department of Public Instruction developed a standard for calculating a weighted grade point average and class rank.
Class rank is based on a weighted grade point average in accordance with NC guidelines. Such a system is intended to encourage students to take more challenging and rigorous courses in preparation for post-secondary education. Stanly County Schools will use the NC 10 point grading scale in computing class rank.
Class rank will be completed at the end of each semester. All courses will be included in the class rank system in compliance with regulations issued by the NC Department of Public Instruction.
The top academic students for the graduation class would be recognized as Latin Honor Graduates.
The three levels of Latin Honors include:
cum laude (with praise); Students who earn a GPA between 4.0 – 4.24 will receive cum laude distinction.
magna cum laude (with great praise); Students earning a GPA of 4.25 – 4.39 will receive magna cum laude distinction.
summa cum laude (with highest praise); Students earning a GPA of 4.4 or greater will receive summa cum laude distinction.
The Latin Honors system will maintain academic competition and recognize student s deserving academic honors for achieving academic excellence.
Class rank and GPAs will remain on each student’s transcript. Latin Honors is effective for students entering 9th grade during the 2015-2016 school year.
