Core Learning-Outcomes and Assessment

Starting in the 2022–23 academic year, the College assesses eight Core Learning-Outcomes (see below). These components are introduced in a set of Core courses and continued in students' major areas of study.

Full-time professors who teach Core courses or capstone courses may be selected to submit course artifacts for assessment by the Core Development Committee.

If your section is selected, please download the corresponding rubric and (see below); enter each of your students onto a row in Column A of the spreadsheet you receive a link to in your email; and, based on a major assignment in your section, evaluate each student for whether the assignment demonstrates that the student displays achievement of that core outcome.

Completed spreadsheets are due on the grading deadline for the semester in question.

If you are teaching a course that is intended to achieve a Core Learning-Outcome (please see curriculum map below), then if a rubric is available for that outcome, then please consider associating that rubric in Canvas with at least one of your assignments in that semester, and "grading" that assignment based on that Core rubric. For instructions about how to do so, please click here.

Rubrics

As CDC develops rubrics, they will be posted and linked here.

You may also add Core rubrics to your assignments in Canvas. Go to your assignment in Canvas and click the "snowman" menu in the upper right (under the Student View button). Select "Add Rubric." Now click "Find a Rubric" in the upper right.  This brings up the "Find Existing Rubric" dialog. Click "Spring Hill College" on the menu on the left. This will bring up the choices of the rubrics that are already programmed into Canvas. Select the one you want.  Then scroll down in the dialog and click the button marked "Use This Rubric."

Assessment Schedule

For lower-division courses, two outcomes are assessed for every semester. Here is the upcoming schedule:

For upper-division courses or courses intended for majors, all outcomes are assessed for every Fall and Spring semester. Every instructor for a Fall or Spring senior-level course assesses at least one of the outcomes mapped to their courses.

Magis courses are only assessed on CLOS 1–4.

Fall instructors whose sections are selected will be notified by 1 May of that academic year; Spring instructors whose sections are selected will be notified by 1 December of the preceding academic year.

General Procedure

After an initial cycle is complete, the regular cycle is as follows:
