SAFETY
We will be working with chemicals, glassware, and open flames in a laboratory. Students must follow safety precautions as part of the lab procedures. Failure to follow the instructions and general safety directives could result in injury. Therefore, safety violations will result is a deduction in lab points for the lab report grade. Minor infractions will be minor points; major infractions will be a major loss in points and possible detention for negligence and misbehavior in lab. We will be reviewing lab safety as an activity, and with each lab that is done. These are standard rules for all laboratory activities in chemistry, biology and other sciences:
1. Wear goggles . The goggles must be worn for the entire lab activity, especially during clean up. The teacher will direct when goggles can be removed. A relief are is always available.
2. Follow the Procedure. Students must follow the established procedures and experimental design. The procedures have been designed for a safe demonstration of a concept. Failure to follow directions could result is a dangerous situation: fire, exploding glassware, dangerous chemical reactions, and unknown consequences.
3. Wear Proper Clothing. Open-toed shoes should not be worn in lab. Aprons must be worn. Occasionally, gloves are worn. Long hair should be pulled back.
4. General Care Should Be Taken. A laboratory is full of students. It is not the same as a home kitchen. Be aware of the students around you during lab. Think about what you are doing, ask questions about the procedure. Test tubes always point away from people while being heated.
5. No Cell Phones . The distraction created by cell phone use in the laboratory is dangerous and will have consequences.
