I. Purpose: Temperature change which causes a change from Solid to liquid to gas is an important concept.
The inquiry will investigate those changes with the added goal of using the PASCO temperature probe to record data and graph the results.
II. Materials:
1. PASCO temperature probe.
2. SparkVue chromebook App
3. Wireless connector
4. Ring stand
5. 250 mL beaker
6. Electric heater
7. Ice
III. Procedure
A. Melting Point Inquiry
1. Place 20g of ice into a 250 mL beaker with 100 mL of water.
2. Set up the PASCO temperature probe in the beaker, but not touching the sides. Use the ring stand holders to suspend the probe in the water.
3. Install the SparkVue App.
4. Follow the verbal instructions for setting up the graphing in the App.
5. Press Start on the screen, and monitor the progress. Make observations. Run the experiment until steam is produced, then turn off the heat and hit stop for your graphing.
6. Save the graph to Drive.
IV . Results
1. Include your graph from ice to steam.
2. Include the data table.
3. Include observations.
V. Conclusions
1. Explain the data collected and graph generated. Where are the phases of water shown in these?
2. Explain sources of error and how this experiment could be improved.
