What Lexile Level Should My Students Be Reading?

Here are some resources put together by the Schoharie librarian that will be helpful in determining the lexile level of reading materials. Additionally, the Dale-Chall readability calculator will allow you to copy and paste in text to determine a reading level.

State Releases 50% of Questions from 2014 Grades 3 - 8 Assessments

standards measured by NYS tests

The New York State Education Department released approximately 50 percent of the questions used on the 2014 Grades 3 - 8 assessments (a 100 percent increase in the number released for the 2013 tests). The released questions will help students, families, educators, and the public understand the breadth and depth with which the state tests measure college and career readiness.

Understanding what makes text complex

There are several factors that determine whether text is complex, says Timothy Shanahan, a professor and department chairman at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, professors at San Diego State University, California. They write in this article that vocabulary, sentence structure, coherence and organization of the text can indicate its complexity. Another factor, however, is the level of knowledge students have before reading the text. Educational Leadership (3/2012)

Evaluating Your Common Core Unit

NYSED with the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut have developed a Tri-State Rubric for ELA and Math to evaluate CC units. This would also be a valuable tool to use while building a unit.

Common Core Resources to share with Parents

Shifts for Students and Parents - A critical component of a student’s success in school is dependent on what and how they learn at home. This practical guide provides steps that parents can take to improve their child’s learning of the Common Core.

The Parents’ Guide to Student Success was developed by the National Parent Teacher Association® (PTA) in response to the Common Core Standards.

The National PTA® created the guides in English and Spanish for grades K-8 and two for grades 9-12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics).

Common Core Toolkit for Parents and Families is a collection of materials and resources that will help parents and families understand the New York State Common Core implementation. We encourage schools and districts to leverage these resources when reaching out to parents on this important work.

See http://engageny.org/parent-and-family-resources.

In particular, the link below includes everything needed to plan a training or series of trainings to help parents understand college readiness and the Common Core standards. The links on this page include planning tools, documents, and agendas to help prepare for and execute a successful Common Core parent night.
