Scientific Notation
Scientific Notation - Allows us to write large or very small numbers in a way that is easier to write and understand. They are written as a number greater than 1 and less than 10 multiplied by a power of 10. For example: 92,400 can be written in scientific notation as 9.24 x 104.
Let's practice:
Write the number in Scientific Notation:
5,230,000
83,500
10,000,000,000
Write the number in Standard Form:
3.52 x 103
7.546 x 109
4 x 106
1. Phobos and Deimos are the two moons of Mars. If Phobos has a mass of 1.06 x 1016 kg and Deimos has a mass of 2.4 x 1015 kg, which moon has a greater mass? Explain how you found your answer.
2. An ostrich stands about 2.4 meters tall. The yolk of an ostrich egg has a diameter of about 8 cm. Use scientific notation to tell how many times taller an ostrich is than its yolk.
3. How could you compare two numbers written in scientific notation?
