Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Directions for decimal operations:

Use a vertical format to add or subtract decimals. Begin by lining up the decimal points. Then add or subtract as you would with whole numbers. Be sure to write the decimal point in the answer.

Example 1:

a. 5.036 + 12.47

Line up the decimals vertically by decimal point. 5.036

Write a zero as a placeholder + 12.470

17.506

b. 8 - 4.13

Line up the decimals vertically by decimal point.

Write zeros as place holders.

Guided Practice:

1. Find the total cost for dog supplies including a dog bowl for $9.99, dog food for $15.87, 2 bones at $1.37 each, and a dog bed for $44.62.

2. Tim has a fever, his temperature is 101.3 degrees Fahrenheit. If his normal body temperature is 98.6, how many degrees higher is his current temperature.

3. A new college book costs $83.13. If you buy the used college book for $45.92 intead of the new book, how much money will you save?

4. In math class, anyone who earns a grade of 95 or higher will get an A. If your test scores are 96.8, 95.1, 88.7 and 95, what is your average score? What test score do you need on your last test to get an A?
