FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who can join band?

Any 6th grader may join band in August. Students will sign up for band through registration in 5th grade or on the registration link on this website. You may only start band in the 6th grade.

Can I play the drums?

We do not typically use drum set in band class. If a student is interested in playing percussion (Ex: Snare drum, bass drum, xylophone, tambourine, timpani, etc..) he/she must start band in 6th grade on either flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone. Auditions for percussion are held in October and are only open to 6th grade band students. Percussionist are required to learn to play a variety of percussion instruments.

I want to play saxophone.

If you wish to play saxophone you should start band in the 6th grade on the clarinet. In October, clarinet players may audition for the 3-5 saxophone spots. If you are interested in switching instruments, you may wish to rent your instrument from Music and Arts. They will be able to exchange the instrument for you.

Do you have any other instruments like Tuba, French Horn, Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Etc...?

Yes, we have all of these instruments in our bands. First, start on one of the four main instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone. Then, Mrs. Pugh will ask about students who are interested in these larger instruments during your 6th grade year. If you already know you are interested, please tell Mrs. Pugh and she will help you determine whether or not it would be a good idea for you to switch to one of the larger instruments.

Is it okay to buy an instrument from the internet or a pawn shop?

Yes, you can find some really good deal. However, please be careful! Some used instruments may need costly repairs before being ready to play. Also, some new instruments can be very cheaply made and may not last for the entire year. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you are considering purchasing an instrument online, you may want to send me a link to the site. I will be happy to look at the site and try to help you determine if it is a good instrument.

Can I start band in the 7th grade?

No, Holmes Middle School only offers beginning band classes in the 6th grade year. In 7th grade, students will pick up where we left off in 6th grade, and continue to learn increasingly difficult music and concepts. Therefore, if you want to be in band in 7th or 8th grade or in the high school marching or concert band, you must begin band in the 6th grade.
