Please Scroll Down. There's lots of information on this page.

What follows are YouTube videos of the 220 Dolch Sight Words

They are listed in order of frequency of use. Even though they come labeled with "grade levels", our goal is for all our first graders to be able to read all 220 Dolch sight words, in 3 seconds or less, by the end of their first grade year.

As your student watches the video, have him try to say the word before he hears it on the video. The voice on the video is his means of self-checking to make sure he got it right. If there are words that he is struggling with, write them on 3x5 cards; working with 5 words at a time -continually replacing known words with unknown words, until he has mastered all 220 words.

Your student can practice these words on his iPad or tablet (if it has access to the internet) by going to Chrome or Safari and entering this link https://sites.google.com/a/pvlearners.net/cmcghie/social-studies/sight-words

What are sight words?

Sight words are words that we see and use often when

reading and writing. They are high frequency words like:

like, the, and are. Sight words are difficult for children to

read because they often don't sound like their spellings.

These words, therefore, must be memorized.

Sight word knowledge increases reading fluency, speed,

and accuracy. In order for children to become better

readers they must develop a large sight word vocabulary.

Did you know?

The first sight word list was compiled by Edward W. Dolch

who was interested in helping parents and educators

improve the reading ability of their children. The Dolch

sight word list of 220 words makes up over 50 -75 percent

of the words in children's books.

Dolch Sight Words

Below are the Dolch Sight Words lists for quarters 1, 2, 3, and 4. These are the sight words from the district curriculum map. Although we will be studying all of the 220 Dolch sight words, these are the minimum words that the student must know and be tested on, in order to meet the basic district standards. Please help your student with any words he does not know by writing his unknown words on 3x5 cards and practicing the words with him. Work with 5 words at a time, replacing known words, with unknown words.

Sight words are an important part of fluency, so it is important that your student be able to read all the words correctly in three seconds or less -no "sounding out" of sight words. Sight words must be learned to the point of automaticity.

Sight words need to be read in 3 seconds or less --no sounding out. Work with 5 flash cards, only. As words are learned, replace those word cards with unknown words. Repeat the process until all the words are known.
