The Welcome

The Poowhiri is used to welcome any new members to Puni School including new students and their whaanau, new teachers, student teachers, support staff, Principals, ERO, PD staff who will have an ongoing relationship with the school, All Blacks, Ranfurly Shield, visiting schools etc.

Karanga: starting with the tangata whenua (us) e.g “haere mai ngaa manuwhiri tuarangi e…”

Reply karanga from the manuwhiri e.g. “karanga mai i runga i te kaupapa o te ra nei e…”

Final karanga from the tangata whenua e.g. “haere mai i runga i te aroha e…”

Haka poowhiri: Toia Mai followed by REACH haka or Tika Tonu

Tangata whenua final karanga to tell the manuwhiri to be seated e.g. “whakatau mai ra whakatau mai ra”

Whole school waiata tautoko: Putiputi

Final speech from Tangata Whenua i.e. Principal

Waiata tautoko: Ma te Mahi Ka Ora, Piriponotia, E I A I E  or Tuutira Mai

Then hariruu: Manuwhiri to come to the tangata whenua side. Students in the front row accompanied by teachers, house captains and Principal to hariruu-shake hands and hongi to represent whole school.
