Week 7: WW1 - The First World War Overview

We now shift our focus from the Boer War to that of our the first world war. Using the link posted, find out

*why New Zealand came to participate in this war?

*reasons similar to that of the Boer war?

*statistics: how many New Zealanders went to this war? What was NZ's population at that time? How many returned?

*YOUR OPINION: should we have taken part in this war. Imagine you were alive in that time, how might have you felt? What would you have done?

Week 6: Boer War - New Zealand's experience. 1899 - 1902

Read this article about the conditions in South Africa. Imagine you are one of the NZ soldiers. Write a diary entry that a soldier may have written about a day in the life of a Kiwi in the South Africa war. Think about the climate, setting, food, camp, your property, travel and others around you.

Introductions: who am I? Name, family, background - culture, religion, other important factors in your family’s past.

In what ways do these factors shape how you and your family live today?

Product: presentation of visual mihi along with speech before the extension group.

Communicate through graphics your personal montage that include important features of your life - people, place and past. Culture(s) in your family, religion, an event that changed your family’s history?

Purpose: We will learn about a past societies and communities and how they functioned. How the diverse cultures and identities of people within those communities has impact on participation of groups and individuals. This task begins with our society and community….

Task guidelines

1. Decide on 4 important features of you and your family that you want to share with a global audience (Schools in NZ and Australia will be interacting with you). Aspects of mihi learnt in Te Reo Maori is a good place to start.

2. Create symbols/illustrations that reflect these 4 things - use paint/draw programme of your choice

3. Post these graphics in comic life layout

4. Export your complete visual montage in comic life to ‘giff’

5. Post your visual mihi online - flickr (extpes@yahoo.com, talofa)

6. Post notes and explanation of montage on flickr

7. Comment on at least 4 of your peers montage in flickr
