Before submitting a referral to the CST, here are some questions that should be answered. The answers to these questions can be ascertained from colleagues, counselors, your computer, and possibly the student.
How is the student's performance in his/her other classes?
Do other teachers see the same behavior/performance problems with this student?
Have you spoke with the student's parents, either in person or on the phone, regarding their child's behavior/performance?
Is there any standardized test scores for this student?
How did the student perform last year?
How is the student's attendance?
Was a referral previously submitted for this student? If yes, what were the circumstances?
Have you had the student stay after school to discuss his or her situation?
Is the student able to complete the assigned work after school with a one-on-one situation?
Is the student in therapy here or in the private sector?
What is his/her home situations?
Is the student involved in any extracurricular activities? How does the student's coach/advisor see him/her?
Does the student have a discipline record with the school?. . .A police record?
Have you made any modifications or accommodations academically to see if there is any way the student can make it in the mainstream? If yes, what?
Have you done anything different, or extra or special to see if the student “will buy what you're selling”?
Yes, we are very aware of the time demands on all of us; however, a referral should NOT be made lightly. We believe the answers to most of these questions are easily obtained, expending minimal time and effort. This is merely a guide for you.
If it is appropriate to refer a student, please do so but a Child Study Team evaluation and classification is not the end, nor is it the only solution. Always consider RISE (I&RS), counseling, 504 accommodations, tutoring, parental contact, etc.
