Overview
Big Idea: Engineering Design Journals (EDJ) are used to record and document all intellectual property when developing solutions to engineering problems.
Teacher's Note: Big ideas should be made explicit to students by writing them on the board and/or reading them aloud.
Purpose of Lesson: The purpose of this lesson is to document the Engineering Design Process, which is used to present solutions.
Standards/Benchmarks
STL 11R: Evaluate final solutions and communicate observation, processes, and results of the entire design process, using verbal, graphic, quantitative, virtual, and written means, in addition to three-dimensional models.
Learning Objectives
Students will use an engineering design journal (EDJ) to document the process used to solve engineering problems.
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Engagement:
The teacher will pose the following question to the class:
The teacher will explain that documenting the process used to create new ideas is essential to proving that the work they have conducted is their intellectual property. The teacher will explain that this is important when filing for a patent, which can lead to making money.
Exploration:
The teacher will distribute Engineering Design Journals to the class. Students will write their name, class period, and any additional information on the front of their journal. The teacher will explain the process for collecting and distributing the engineering design journals and discuss grading policy as appropriate.
Explanation:
The teacher will present the engineering design journal presentation (FirstFiveDaysPresentation 4.1) The teacher will discuss that the engineering design journal (EDJ) will be used throughout the school year to record student work and thought processes.
Teacher Note:The teacher may also require that the use of an engineering design journal (EDJ) be used in assessments as well as all in-class activities.
Extension:
Students will create their own engineering design journal using a composition notebook with graph paper.
Evaluation:
The student's knowledge, skills and attitudes are assessed through formative teacher observations and questioning. Student may use the sample FoT engineering design journals to help record notes.
