Every student is required to complete the welding project. The project is an individual assignment and is due by the end of day on Friday, January 12th.
- The completed project must be placed on the designated self in the Welding Shed
- the student's name written clearly on blue tape on the completed project
- all phases of the project including photos documenting final project must be documented in each student's digital notebook (full credit will not be awarded if final picture of completed project is not present).
**Students should not be reliant on class time to complete the welding project. Class time will be allocated to start the project, however, class time will not be sufficient to complete the project. Students should take advantage of after school work time on Mondays and Thursdays, Tuesday lunch & flex, as well as additional Design Den open lab hours (see calendar) to complete the project.
Project Challenge: Design and build a metal framed stool
with a laser engraved wooden seat
Project Design Specifications:
- The stool shall range in height from 18" - 29"
- The stool shall have a footrest
- The stool shall have a laser engraved wooden seat (containing a school appropriate image)
- The stool shall be finished (rough edges removed and painted) so it is safe to be used and does not ruin clothing
- The stool shall be modeled in CAD and have dimensioned drawings representing front, lateral, and top views
Project Deliverables:
- 1 stool built to design specifications
- CAD model of stool
- Dimensioned CAD drawings of stool
- Project workflow document (Gantt Chart, calendar, task list or similar)
- 2-3 minute video of designer explaining their manufacturing process in assembling the stool
Welding Project Learning Objectives (Grading):
To earn full credit for Competency 1 when submitting your welding portfolio demonstrate you can
- Analyze and explain system/project constraints
To earn full credit for Competency 2 when submitting your welding portfolio demonstrate you can
- Assess the project's tasks to differentiate the tool(s) needed to safely and efficiently complete the welding project
- Independently design and build a safe and functional stool
- Devise a method for completing a project safely
To earn full credit for Competency 3 when submitting your welding portfolio demonstrate you can
- Create a labeled and dimensioned CAD model(s) of standard part (caster, rolling stool, or similar)
- Create a labeled and dimensioned CAD drawing(s) of standard part (caster, rolling stool, or similar)
- Explain the different techniques to safely measure, cut, assemble, and finish products made from steel
- Demonstrate the different techniques to safely measure, cut, assemble, and finish products made from steel
- Create a project workflow tool that documents the estimated length of the entire project as well as highlights the critical sub-system assembly steps
To earn full credit for Competency 4 when submitting your welding portfolio demonstrate you can.
- Identify the English and Metric units commonly used for measuring distance
- Understand the degree of accuracy needed for completing my welding project
To earn full credit for Competency 7 when submitting your welding portfolio demonstrate you can.
- Create a workflow tool outlining the critical production components of the project
- Communicate visually by creating technical drawings using established engineering graphics tools, techniques, and standards
