NASA has substantially overhauled the rules, scoring, and engineering constraints for the 2018 race. As a result of the changes, teams now have a multitude of options with regards to course strategy. In recent years, our design focused on maintaining speed through obstacles and flat course portions while having a low gear ratio to conquer the Martian butte and constructing wheels with ample floatation to traverse the Martian sand dunes. This year a well crafted and executed strategy will be crucial to performing our best.
As coaches, it is our belief that a thorough and detailed understanding of the rules is necessary for each and every member of the Parish team. Vigorous analysis and discussion of the information put forth in the guidebook will yield our best strategy and that strategy will inform the design and production of the rover. This massive and complex project is only possible if we are all working together and "speaking the same language."
Therefore, all team members must demonstrate mastery of the competition rules and terminology published in the 2018 Rover Challenge Guidebook by scoring 85% on the Competition Rules Mastery quiz by Friday, December 15th. The Competition Rules Mastery Quiz will follow a format similar to the math mastery test (retake details are below), your highest score will be recorded for a grade. All students will take Competition Rules Mastery quiz on Monday, December 4th. Second and third attempts at mastery will take place as needed after Dec. 4th and MUST be completed by Friday, December 15th for credit to be awarded.
