Proposed Course Strategy 1:
(Katie, Emma, Grace, Ryan, Kavita, Mary)
Aim to get back at 6:00, but will probably get back at 7:00
Focus on getting through the course in time, with putting tasks in if we have the time to do so
Also we could take two rovers and take '17 and bypass the butte and crater and have a nice fast time under our belt
Bypass:
- martian butte: don't even attempt because that would waste time
- entire lunar crater, including obstacle 9 and task 4
- pros:
- would save a lot of time, 28 seconds if on '17 since we got stuck last year
- cons:
- 13 points potentially lost, really if we don't attempt task 4 is 9 points
- we don't know how the bypass works, hopefully we don't even have to enter the crater to bypass it
- obstacle 12 and 13 don't take very long, but if needed we will bypass
- bypassing the martian butte and lunar crater would buy us about a minute of time
Tasks:
- Task 1: consider doing it for second day
- right off the bat slows you down
- if we can simulate soil retrieval challenge at Parish and practice it down to 10 seconds then attempt
- if soil is far enough apart that we have to drive in-between collections, don't attempt
- Task 2: prepare for it and consider doing it for second day, we don't even need a filter to get 4 points if we have safe storage and get back before 7:00
- get the filters but don't plan on doing it
- also if we take one picture unfiltered it get 4 points without a filter not the camera
- Task 3: attempt unless it has been 2:15 since start then do not attempt
- its easy to prep for and high points
- however since it is long, if do this task do not do other tasks
- major con is that it could take a long time
- also if its cloudy don't do task
- Task 4:probably do not attempt
- lowest point value of tasks and you have to get off
- Task 5: prepare a containment system, and if we can get to task 5 by
- task 5 can be attempted on the way up or on the way back, attempt it on the way back as a last resort
- note: if we have more than one person who can reach off rover and grab, then more samples can be retrieved
- if we get two samples we still get 8 points even if we do not get the full 10
- in summary, prep for all of them but only attempt 1, either 2 or 3
Wheels:
- plan would be to keep regular wheels
- if we do thin wheels, will need to probably bypass the martian dunes, boulder pit, and crevasses as well as other bypass options
What We Need:
- higher gear ratio if not doing butte
- to get faster
Using this strategy, if we bypass the lunar crater obstacle and the butte, go through all the other obstacles, do task 3, have fenders that remain attached for the entire duration of the race, fit into the cube, assemble in 2 minutes, were in the 171-210 weight category, and make it back in time with 7:00 that would be 59 points. If we make it back in 6:00 it could be 64 points.
