WINDHAM COUNTY - THE QUIET CORNER

The Old Connecticut Path crosses four towns in Windham County: Thompson, Woodstock, Eastford and Ashford. These towns are part of what has come to be known as the "Quiet Corner" of Connecticut. Time travel and treasure hunting are both possible here.

The hills of Windham County across the four towns have reverted to quiet woodlands and fields as the population has moved away from the farms and villages that once populated the countryside. The passage of time has transformed the land into a unique place with "dark" night skies. Viewed from space at night, the East Coast megalopolis is a continuous strip of city lights that stretches over 600 miles, all the way from DC to Boston. Except for one last dark spot: the Quiet Corner. This area is one of the last vestiges of Southern New England’s dense forests. They provide clean water and air, climate amelioration, wildlife habitat, timber and non-timber forest products, and recreation.Visitors to the towns along the Old Connecticut Path have opportunities to enter a world that is closer to that which might have been experienced by those first pioneers traveling to Connecticut. While their world can never be fully restored, there are places along the Path where imagination can transport visitors back in time. To walk here as the pioneers did is to gain an understanding of the courage and faith of those who walked from Newtown (Cambridge), Watertown and Dorchester to their new homes in Connecticut.

Special places along the way that are publicly owned or held by private land trusts lead treasure hunters following the Path to special places where it is possible to walk back in time and to imagine the land that the Connecticut pioneers passed through. To walk in these special places opens a door to understanding of the pioneer experience far deeper than can be found by driving along the highways and byways of Windham County.

The "Quiet Corner" provides a time machine to places from another age. Miss Ellen Larned's "Map of Ancient Windham County" (left) published in 1874 as part of Larned's History of Windham County provides a treasure map for the modern traveler to find special places along the Old Connecticut Path.Using Larned's map and the route shown for the Old Connecticut Path, it is possible to follow the route across Thompson, Woodstock, Eastford and Ashford in Windham County, and to continue across Willington to the Willimantic River in Tolland.
