BAND SAW
Video
A. BANDSAW Specific Safe Operational Procedures:
Adjust the upper guard and guide about 1/8" to 1/4" above material to be cut.
Teeth on the blade should point down or in direction of travel of blade.
Be sure work is free of nails, paint, and obstructions. Paint may obscure potential hazards in the stock - and cutting painted stock may leave residue on the blade - do NOT cut painted stock.
Mark the material clearly so that you can see lines at a reasonable distance.
Plan your cuts, lay out and make "relief" cuts before cutting long curves.
Do not start cutting until saw is running at full speed.
Feed the stock into the saw slowly and only as fast as the saw will take it.
If freehand sawing, use one hand to guide the work and the other to push work into the saw.
Do not force or twist the wood into the blade so as to produce excess stress on the blade.
If the stocks binds or pinches the blade, do not attempt to back out until the power has been shut off and the machine stops.
Use the fence or miter gauge when sawing straight lines.
The table should be tilted for making bevel cuts.
Removing all scraps from the table with a brush, push stick, or scrap piece of wood only when the power is off and the blade is stopped.
NEW
The use of a push stick is required when cutting small/narrow stock
Do not stand on the right side of the blade when operating the machine - a broken blade may be flung in that direction
Be sure that the TABLE is secured before operating the machine
Fingers should never be less then 2" from the blade at all time.
Never use a rag for cleaning as it may get caught and pull you hand into the blade
B. GENERAL Safety Practices:
Wear safety glasses at all times
Do not operate saw without instructor’s permission
Avoid wearing loose clothing.
Keep floor and surrounding area free of scrap that might cause tripping.
Be sure saw is properly grounded.
Keep all guards in place at all times.
Get someone to assist you in operations which are not safety handled alone.
Make all adjustments with the power off and blade stopped.
Keep hands a safe distance from moving parts, never closer than 2" from the blade.
Give undivided attention to the job. The operator should be the only one inside the safety zone area.
Never reach around, behind or across a moving blade.
When making a cut, do not place your hand in line with the cutting edge.
Never attempt to remove small pieces of wood from near the blade while the saw is running.
Never leave a running saw unattended.
When finishing cutting, shut off the switch and disconnect machine from power source. Do not leave the safety zone until the blade comes to a complete stop.
