Good Housekeeping Safe Practices:

  2. Remember to put away tools directly after use and clean work areas constantly

Safe Basic Tool Use:

  1. Do not distract a person using tools – concentration is key.

  2. Follow safety procedures as explained and demonstrated by your teacher, when using all tools.

  3. Use care and common sense when using sharp tools –eg. the blade or bit is kept pointing down at all times and keep hands and fingers behind any tool’s cutting edge.

  4. Unplug tools when not in use. Pull the plug and not the cord.

  5. Basic “rule of thumb” is that one thing moves and that one thing is always the blade or the bit therefore all stock materials (plastic/wood/metal) must be properly clamped on worktables or bench, or held securely in a vice.

  6. Use tools only for the purpose for which they are intended. Breaking or damaging equipment, tools and blades as a result of misuse will not be tolerated.

  7. All adjustments to a machine must be done with the power disconnected and approval or assistance from your teacher

  8. Pass tools properly from hand to hand, don’t toss them or slide them.

  9. Report any faulty, damaged or defective or mislaid tools to teacher immediately.

  10. Inform your instructor of all injuries, damaged/defective tools and dangerous situations.

  11. Operate equipment, tools or machinery only after receiving proper instruction and approval from the instructor.
