The Carvey machine is a CNC (Computer Numeric Control) router that easily takes designs you create in Easel and carves materials using a milling bit (similar to a drill bit). You can use a variety of materials in your projects based on their availability.
To learn a bit about using our CNC machine (Carvey) and the online CAD tool (Easel), you'll start by making a mosaic tile to contribute to our tile showcase (coming soon!). To get started, watch this video for an overview of both Carvey and Easel.
Now that you know a bit about the tools we will be using, it is time to start your first project! Using this Mosaic Tile tutorial, you'll be able to create a tile that will be added to our display in the hallway. We will change out tiles as we build, so you will eventually get to take your project home!
The great folks at Inventables have put together short video classes that will help guide you in designing a variety of projects. These are great projects to work on as part of your SMART goal or after you finish creating a mosaic tile. Check with Mr. Steinbach to ensure we have the materials necessary for you to complete your project. Make sure to watch the accompanying Easel Live YouTube video for each project.
It's now time to design your own artwork using code. We'll be able to carve it as another tile, carve and paint a piece of wood, or make our own custom ink stamps using your design! You'll be using a tool called Turtle Art to make your designs and then we'll import those pictures into Easel. For the time being, these links should help you get started.
When designing in TurtleArt, you will probably want to keep your design a single color and focus on making only lines (straight and curved). The path of the turtle when drawing will be the same path as the milling bit in the Carvey.
