10.8a Cultures and countries experience and view modernization differently. For some, it is a change from a traditional rural, agrarian condition to a secular, urban, industrial condition. Some see modernization as a potential threat and others as an opportunity to be met.

Close reading & questions on how Ataturk modernized Turkey (p.2-3)

Iranian Revolution:   brief close reading on the Iranian Revolution and its effects.  Contains several graphic organizers highlighting the introduction of a theocracy to Iran; in addition to a compare/contrast organizer on the Shah Pahlavi and Ayatollah Khomeini (p. 1-4)

 Stage 3- Related Lessons

"I Think" lesson, "In the Extreme" ( p. 29):  The student will be able to explain how extremists fight for their causes and instill terror in others.

"I Think" lesson (p. 39): lesson places an emphasis on how modernization has created tension in the Middle East.

DBQ: Ataturk: this dbq examines whether Ataturk's reforms were the results of an authoritarian dictator with nationalistic aspirations or a revolutionary reformer with a desire for Westernization.


"I Think" lesson (p. 82):  lesson demonstrates how changes in government have had an either positive or negative impact on civilians in South Africa and China. 

Discussion Questions: 

What were some of the changes Ataturk instituted once he came into power?  

How did these reforms have an impact on Turkish citizens?

SHEG lessson:  Kemal Ataturk - "Did Atatürk’s reforms actually improve the status of women in Turkey?"; lesson incorporates close reading of various documents along with guided questions.

Discussion Question:

How would you  categorize the outcome of the Iran Revolution:  were there positive or negative effects?  Explain.
