Room E211 is a "RED Zone" for Cell Phone Use

A "RED Zone" designates that phones can be used at the discretion of the teacher. As we are in a modern computer lab with a high speed connection, workstations for every student there is no need for students to be accessing their phones. In some instances there maybe a need to access their phones to transfer an image for a school project. However, with a little planning this can be done at home or outside of class. If a cell phone is to be used for an activity it will be made clear by the instructor.

Why A No Phone policy?

Class time is limited. Repeating directions, instructions and information waste instructional time and takes time away from other students and activities in the classroom. Experience in the classroom has demonstrated the following:

  • Cell phone use during class is often the primary cause for low grades in the course

  • Cell phone use during class is often the primary cause for missing assignments

  • Habitual cell phone use can be the primary cause for failing the course

  • Cell phone use is often a component of school discipline problems

  • Cell phone use during class time takes away from instructional time for not just the student using the cell phone

Cell Phone Procedure in E211

There is a cell phone storage area in E211 by the teacher's desk. Any cell phone brought to E211 will go into this storage area. There are no exceptions to this policy. Additionally, the teacher and the school system do not accept any responsibility for the phone will in the classroom or storage area. Placing the phone there each day is the responsibility of the student. These are the options available to the student.

  • Leave their cell phone at home

  • Leave their cell phone in their car (if they drive to school)

  • Leave their cell phone in their locker

  • Leave their cell phone in the cell phone rack in E211 by the teacher's desk

    • There is a power strip available there for charging

  • Phones are not to be accessed when in the phone rack

Not following this policy will result in the following actions.

    • Confiscation of the cell phone for the class period (usually a first time warning only)

    • Failure to put the phone in the rack Wednesday detention

    • Confiscation of the cell phone at which time it will be forwarded to the Principal's office

    • An Office referral write-up may be used in addition to the above if the student becomes disruptive or insubordinate

When it is all said and done this can be a very simple process. Keeping the cell phone out of the learning environment is the first step to having students engaged in the classroom.
